Title research: Gattaca

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

There was a total of 18 title scenes, 20 including the two quotes at the very beginning. It started with the quotes then went to the main production company(Columbia), the production, who the film was by, finally the cast. They showed two cast members then the main title, Gattaca, then the rest of the cast. It is assumed that the two first cast members listed are the main actors. Then finally, the other important people that added to the film at the end.

2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do you they make you feel)

The imaging at the start is most just blue screen. It shows something falling and bouncing around in the background. Then at the end you can see a main shaving his beard. The movie is starting at the end of the title sequence. The imaging at the beginning make me feel wonder as to what's going to happen and leave me suspenseful because they don't give you a lot of description. This sequence Is very emotional compared to others, along with the snow in the background, gives a cold vibe to the movie.

3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (Can you tell what genre the film is)

You can tell what genre the is by the music and other appeals. The film is also a sci-fi and thriller, along with drama. You can see it is very futuristic, with the blue tones. This adds in to the sci-fi drama. You can also see the drama/ thriller by the things falling and adding in the emotion.

4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The sound adds a lot to real in the audience. The somber music shows the drama of the film. The editing style is very slow as well. This appeals to this genre because it shows the pace of the film. The word choice and how long the sequence appeals to the audience.
